Through use of unusual perspectives, reflections, and macro-photography, JoAnn’s subjects and frames themselves invite the viewer in for yet an even closer look. She carves and etches patterns from nature into my frames, and also uses color in the frames to set off the photography. Each piece is a unique creation. Many photos were taken in the woods surrounding the city of Oneonta, NY, as well as framed in cherry, pine and basswood, all produced locally. She also uses recycled woods.
The framing captures both a traditional, yet magical feeling, and the woodwork is of high quality. JoAnn also does distinctive custom framing in these woods and patterns for any art or photographs you wish to have framed. You can see JoAnn’s pieces display at Artisan’s Guild of Oneonta, where she is a member. Although always an avid photographer, and skilled woodworker, most ventures limited to repair and restoration of her family’s 1885 Victorian home in Oneonta, JoAnn’s artistic side, combining those two talents, emerged after both raising a family, and a lengthy career educating young children. JoAnn has been an Oneonta resident for the past 28 years. With music a lifelong avocation, she is also currently a pianist in the area working with the contemporary duo Party of Two, and with husband singer/songwriter Joe Chmielowski as part of the group Polish Moses. She also worked as piano accompanist and managerfor Al Gallodoro, an internationally renowned jazz saxophonist/clarinetist for 12 years until his death, at age 95 in 2008.
